An innovative program to accurately diagnose and treat cancer and other conditions of the gastrointestinal tract is available at The Endoscopy Center at our hospital.
Nithin Karanth, MD, board certified interventional gastroenterologist with fellowship training in advanced therapeutic endoscopy, leads this new program.
Dr. Karanth is one of only a few gastroenterologists in Rhode Island who practice advanced interventional techniques. Residency trained at Mt. Sinai Hospital, New York, he completed fellowship training at Drexel University and Lenox Hill Hospital, New York.
The interventional endoscopy program offers patients quicker recovery time, less pain, fewer complications, less bleeding and shorter or no hospital stay.
New procedures offer safe, effective alternatives to more invasive options and can assist in accurately diagnosing, staging and treating a wide variety of disorders including early stage cancers and precancerous lesions, gallstones and gastroesophageal reflux disease.
Advanced procedures available at Memorial’s Endoscopy Center include endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) with fine needle aspiration for staging esophageal, gastric, pancreatic and rectal cancers. It is also used for diagnosis and drainage of pancreatic cysts and for management of pain in pancreatic cancer patients.
Complex endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is offered for
management of diseases such as chronic pancreatitis and to alleviate malignant disease. Through the use of special equipment, this procedure can be carried out for patients with surgically altered anatomy such as prior gastric bypass surgery.
Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) and complex polypectomy is available for removal of large or difficult lesions or early cancer in the GI tract.
The Endoscopy Center is the only site in RI where single balloon enteroscopy is performed. This therapeutic procedure enables precise removal of polyps from the small intestine as well as treatment and identification of bleeding in the small intestine. It can be used to identify and treat lesions previously seen in procedures using a camera enclosed in a capsule to view strictures, polyps and various other ailments.
