Patient Information and Privacy
The federal Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) outlines strict rules for hospitals and other healthcare providers to follow to protect the privacy of patients.

Callers to Memorial's Patient Information Desk at (401) 729-2322, including family members, will be given only a statement about a patient's general health condition. Friends and famiy members may call a patient directly if the patient has made arrangements for telephone service in his or her room.

Because of patient confidentiality, staff members on the Maternity Unit cannot give out information over the telephone regarding a patient’s admission, room number, labor progress, time of baby’s birth, or the baby’s sex or weight.

Under HIPAA guidelines, patients also have the right to choose not to be listed in our patient information directory. In that case, we are not allowed to even confirm that a patient is here. This also can prevent incoming telephone calls and the delivery of flowers and mail.

Family and friends are encouraged to visit you in the hospital whenever possible unless your condition limits visitors or you request visitor restrictions. Your healthcare team wants to ensure that you receive adequate rest, as well as the necessary support from your loved ones.

Visiting Hours
The following are guidelines for visiting patients at Memorial Hospital:

Medical/Surgical Units and the Center for Rehabilitation (the 6th floor of the Wood Building; the 5th and 6th floors of the Hodgson Building; and the 1st and 2nd floors of the Richardson Building): Noon to 8 pm

Pediatrics Unit (the 4th floor of the Wood Building)
Legal Guardians: 24-hour privileges
Siblings: Please make arrangements with the nursing staff.
All other visitors: Noon to 8 pm

Special Care Unit (ICU/CCU) (the 4th floor of the Hodgson Building): Please make arrangements with the nursing staff.

Maternity/Postpartum Unit (the 2nd floor of the Wood building)
Fathers/Support persons:  24-hour privileges
Grandparents:  Noon to 8:00 pm
Other visitors:  2:30 to 8:00 pm

Labor and delivery rooms: Coaches/Support persons only
  • Siblings of a newborn are encouraged to visit during general visiting hours, but must be accompanied by an adult, other than the mother, who is able to provide adequate supervision.
  • Infants remaining in the nursery once you are discharged may be visited at any time by you and your designated significant other, provided he or she is wearing the newborn’s matching identification band. A “parent room” is available for overnight accommodations at no charge.

  • A maximum of two visitors at a time is preferred, especially if you have a roommate.
  • Children younger than 10 years old are permitted to visit you in any unit if the visit is coordinated with the nursing staff and the children are accompanied by an adult who is able to provide adequate supervision.

Isolation

Isolation and standard precaution procedures such as wearing gowns, masks and gloves are often used to protect you, other patients and staff when certain diseases are suspected or confirmed. Handwashing is very important. You can expect your caregivers to wash their hands before and after they care for you.

If you must be in isolation, your visitors also will be expected to wear protective attire. Special signs will be posted on your door, and your nurse can answer any of your visitors' questions.

Waiting Areas
Waiting areas for visitors are conveniently located adjacent to patient units. Your visitors can ask your nurse to direct them to the nearest waiting area.

Dining
The hospital's cafeteria, located on the ground floor of the Wood Building, is open to the public from 9 to 10 am; 11:00 am to 1:30 pm; and 4:30 pm to 7:00 pm.

The fully automated coffee shop is located off the main lobby in the Sayles Building and contains vending machines that dispense hot and cold food and drinks. A microwave oven is available. Vending machines are also available next to the waiting area in the Emergency Department.

Guest Food Trays
Your visitors may make arrangements for guest food trays at a cost of $5.00 at the cashier's office in the hospital's main lobby. After your nurse receives the receipt, he or she will contact Food and Nutrition Services to set up a menu.

Tobacco Use
To improve community health, well-being and safety, Memorial Hospital has joined with other members of the Hospital Association of Rhode Island in creating a tobacco-free environment. Patients and visitors are not allowed to use tobacco products anywhere on the hospital campus. Visitors who wish to use tobacco products need to leave the property to do so.

Gift Shop
The hospital's gift shop is located in the main lobby and stocks fresh flowers, greeting cards, snacks, and gifts for all ages. It is open weekdays 10 am - 7 pm. Hours vary on weekends.  More info here...

Latex Balloons
Due to health concerns, latex balloons are not permitted for patients or staff at Memorial Hospital. For some individuals, latex poses a potentially life-threatening danger of shock or respiratory arrest. Mylar balloons do not cause an allergic reaction and are most welcome.
