Cardiovascular Diagnostic Testing
Electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG)
  • A test that records the electrical activity of the heart and shows abnormal rhythms and detects heart muscle damage

Transthoracic Echocardiography (TTE)
  • One of the most widely used diagnostic tests for heart disease
  • Utilizes ultrasound (sound waves) to visualize and examine cardiac structures, valves and blood flow to evaluate cardiac function

Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE)
  • Cardiac ultrasound used to evaluate more complex cardiac conditions or when more detailed visualization is needed

Exercise Stress Testing
  • Monitor ECG/EKG, blood pressure, heart rate and symptoms while performing exercise on a treadmill
  • Used to diagnose blockages in the coronary arterie

Stress Echocardiography – Exercise and Dobutamine
  • Combines stress testing and ECG/EKG to evaluate for possible blockages in the blood supply to the heart
  • Can be done with exercise (by treadmill) or with an IV drug, Dobutamine, if unable to exercise

Nuclear Stress Test - Myocardial Perfusion Imaging
  • Evaluates blood flow to the heart muscle during both rest and stress
  • Can be done by exercise or by pharmacologic method (if unable to exercise)

Holter Monitoring
  • A light-weight and extra slim monitor that continuously records ECG/EKG to record electrical activity of the heart for a 24 hour period
  • Used to analyze and diagnose ECG/EKG data quickly and accurately and screen for cardiac arrhythmias

Holter Ambulatory Monitoring – Event Monitoring
  • Longer period of ECG/EKG monitoring – 30 days – to evaluate infrequent symptoms or arrhythmias
  • Three types of monitors – Looping, Auto Trigger, Mobile Outpatient Cardiac Telemetry
  • Patient activates when experiences symptoms or monitor can automatically transmit data or events

Vascular Imaging
  • Screens for peripheral arterial disease including resting and exercise ankle brachial, segmental Doppler pressure and waveforms, to detect blood flow and make images of blood vessels
  • Veins throughout the body can also be imaged for blood flow and blockages
  • Carotid noninvasive testing
  • Abdominal aneurysm screening
RESOURCES
arrow_right.png HOW DOES THE HEART WORK?
The heart is a muscle. It has four chambers that pump blood.  The upper two chambers are called the "atria" and the lower two chambers are called the "ventricles".
The heart is really two pumps that work together to move blood through the body.
