MissionTo render service to Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island.
HistoryIn 1911, a group of dedicated women formed a club "to aid financially and by work, The Memorial Hospital." It was the beginning of a lasting relationship with the hospital encompassing countless hours of service.
The Memorial Hospital Club, as it was then known, devoted its initial years to social service and it continued to provide the salary for a social service worker through 1952. Another early project was the establishment of an emergency fund "to buy milk and eggs and any other things that a needy convalescent patient might require."
The desire to provide for the needs of the hospital community has been a continuing objective of the Auxiliary. Over the years, the needs have changed from sewing bandages and dressings in the 1920s to providing state-of-the-art technical equipment in later years: resuscitators, microscopes, hemoscopes, an electrocardiograph machine, a basic metabolism machine, a cardiac defibrillator, anesthesia and blood bank equipment and a wheel chair for weighing rehabilitation patients.
Departments throughout the hospital have benefited from projects such as equipping examining rooms and establishing the hospital's chapel. Other projects have included initiating the Lifeline response system, providing the pediatric department with a voice activated computer and the birthing center with an infant security monitoring system and birthing tubs. The Auxiliary has also raised funds for the Pediatric Primary Care Center, the Center for Primary Care and The Cancer Center at Memorial Hospital.
Auxiliary members prepare and distribute craft kits to patients. They staff the Memorial's gift shop and serve as registrars and telephone coordinators for the Memorial's annual Kenney Research Day.
Contact usThe Memorial Hospital Auxiliary holds three luncheon meetings a year, providing both a social atmosphere and interesting programs. Dues are $10 per year.
