Nursing CareMemorial Hospital's nursing staff provides professional nursing care on all patient units. Our registered nurses (RNs) are the patient care managers, assessing individual patient needs and planning nursing care from the patient's admission to discharge. Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and certified nursing assistants (CNAs) assist the RNs in the delivery of care. Our multidisciplinary partnership is the foundation of our excellent quality care.
Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island is a teaching affiliate of The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and is committed to quality nursing care. Memorial's Nursing Department is also affiliated with many schools of nursing in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

Collaborative
Practice ModelOur Collaborative Practice model provides the infrastructure for a professional practice environment and promotes positive clinical outcomes. It facilitates active participation of clinical staff and managers in the ongoing development, implementation, and evaluation of processes that guide patient-centered care.
This model fosters active participation of direct care providers in addressing unit-based patient care and practice issues and forwards the recommended solutions to one of four departmental groups for hospital-wide implementation as appropriate:
Practice and ResearchDevelops and maintains standards that promote excellence in an evidence-based practice (EBP) environment. This group advances the profession of nursing through research activities using the Collaborative Research Utilization Model (CRUM) as the framework.
Performance ImprovementIdentifies, implements and evaluates quality initiatives that improve patient safety and outcomes. This group assesses, analyzes and identifies opportunities to improve patient care and nursing practice in the Department of Nursing. The Nursing Performance Improvement Plan is integrated with the hospital's Performance Improvement Plan to enhance the value of care provided.
EducationEstablishes standards of education that promote and support quality practice through continuous learning. This group develops and maintains competencies for all roles and implements other initiatives to promote a culture of learning for staff members.
Leadership
Upholds professional practice by promoting an interdisciplinary environment of support and collaboration that effectively allocates the resources necessary to achieve optimal patient care. This group serves as a forum for Nurse Leaders to discuss clinical operations within the hospital and to focus on improving processes such as patient flow, professional practice and resources.
